1. WELCOME TO MY FREE MONTHLY EZINE

Welcome to the Domino Monthly! I’m so glad you joined me.

Hawaii
is a wonderful, beautiful place. My husband and I enjoyed a week of discovering as much of Hawaii as we could. We tramped across a black lava field on the big island and flew over the sea cliffs of Molokai. We drove up Waimea Canyon road to some nice lookout areas and stood near the well-rusted sign that read, “The Wettest Spot On Earth”.

Some of what we saw was captured in the movie Blue Hawaii, starring Elvis Presley. The movie certainly put me in the mood to go back to the islands. See the movie review below.

I didn’t see many roses among all the orchids and ginger plants in Hawaii. So my rose review is about a flower I found online. I can’t vouch for the descriptions since I’ve never seen one, but I can tell you it sounded like a rose I would like.

Christy award-winning author Kristen Heitzmann is among the top Christian novelists and one of my favorites. Her exciting characters always pull me in and keep me in the story. Her novel, Freefall, is set on the island of Kauai. I found out that the woman who cuts my hair had been to the same places the heroine in the story went to. She got a kick out of that. The review of Freefall is below.

If you have friends that would like to receive the Domino Monthly, I would love to send it to them. Just forward this ezine to them or send them a link to my web site where they can sign up anytime.

Don’t forget to remind them they’ll also get the free weekly tips on How To See God.

2. Old Movie Review:
Blue Hawaii, 1961

Starring Elvis Presley as Chadwick Gates, Blue Hawaii thrilled Elvis fans with plenty of songs and the famous left-sided smile.

Although born in London, Angela Lansbury worked hard on her performance as Mrs. Gates (Chadwick’s mother) a woman from Atlanta, Georgia. The movie was certainly all about Elvis, but Joan Blackman (as Maile Duval) put in a great performance as Chadwick’s girl. I especially liked the fact that Edith Head designed the costumes.

The first thing Elvis does is try to make his girl jealous by kissing another girl. He explained to his girl that he was just having a little fun, but I was getting a little ticked off at him. Thankfully, the playboy attitude stopped after the first section of the movie. And I really must say, that Chadwick was a gentleman after all. He had plenty of opportunities to go for other women during the rest of the movie but, being a gentleman, his role with the other women was one of  Protector and Guide. Tour guide, that is.

This movie did a good job of taking us on a brief highlight tour of Hawaii’s magnificent landscapes. I enjoyed the beach scenes on Oahu, the horseback riding on the shores of Kauai, and even the night time car chase.

Everyone who loves Elvis movies loves the songs. My two favorites were “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” and the last song of the movie “Hawaiian Wedding Song”. Elvis joked about feeling that the wedding scene was so real that ten years had passed before he realized he wasn’t married to her.

Speaking of songs, Elvis (as Chadwick) got into a brawl at a luau and ended up in jail – with his Hawaiian buddies AND their instruments. How convenient! Elvis admits in a quote found on IMDB.com, “I get tired of playing a guy who gets into a fight, then starts singing to the guy he’s just beat up.”

Elvis was nominated for a Grammy award for his performance in Blue Hawaii.

3. Romantic Roses: Aloha rose

The Aloha rose is a pretty pink rose with a strong apple fragrance and has petals that are a darker shade of pink on the reverse side. It’s pretty versatile, and its name is very Hawaiian. So I love it.

It can be a shrub or trained as a climber. It also has been sold as a hybrid tea. The Aloha can reach a height of eight to ten feet with a width of four to eight feet. It grows well in zones five to nine, but is susceptible to mildew and rust.

Okay, I admit it. I’ve never owned one of these and probably have never seen one live (just pictures). However, there is enough information online to make me want to try it out.

4. Book Review: Freefall by Kristen Heitzmann

Hawaii
’s culture, language, and beauty are at the forefront of this suspenseful story of an amnesia victim’s struggle for answers.

Monica Pierce cares for a wounded young woman who showed up without any idea of why she’s on the island of Kauai. Monica’s fiercely protective brother, Cameron, has to find out if the woman is really an amnesia victim.

Driven by the urge to retrace her steps and with reluctant Cameron’s help, the woman they call Jade finds the place of her accident. Although Cameron’s cynicism and distrust annoyed Jade, she’s able to make him believe her claim that there was another with her. Little by little, Jade’s memory comes back and presents problems for her and for the one she was with before her accident.

Cameron puts his life on hold so he can help beautiful Jade. But when he finds out that the woman he’s falling in love with is popular movie star Gentry Fox, he wonders if anyone in the crowd of paparazzi wants her dead. Gentry’s uncle asks Cameron to protect her, a task he’s more than willing to perform.

Christy award winner Kristen Heitzmann captured my imagination again with her latest romantic suspense. Freefall took me out of my chair and into the tumbling waterfall in Kauai.

5. Blognote: Blogging Domino

Blogging Domino is my main blog and where I update readers about everything. All my news gets told here first.

When I go to a writer’s conference, I usually write an article about what happened. Every year, many great instructors give out a wealth of good information . As I learn, I will post tips on getting as much as you can out of conferences.

I often post articles about heroes. Bible heroes, movie heroes, novel heroes. They all fascinate me, no matter where I see them. I even put heroes in my blog’s tagline: Christian fiction author Laura Domino shares her thoughts on life, love, and heroes.

And since I found a couple of food trivia sites, I’ve been posting food-related information according to the theme of the next ezine.

Check it out at http://lauradomino.blogspot.com and see what’s been happening lately.

1. WELCOME TO MY FREE MONTHLY EZINE

Welcome! This is my first issue of the Domino Monthly. I’m so glad you joined me.

Thank you for subscribing to my newsletter. Next month I’ll call it an ezine, but right now I like typing “new”. Humor me. I’ve started a lot of things this year.

I’ve hooked up with my first critique partner. Our novels are one step closer to publication. I’ll keep you informed of our progress as you read Blogging Domino.

I’ve started writing online devotionals. And my new Domino Club blog has started its first year. More on that in a minute.

Every issue of this newsletter (or ezine) is devoted to giving you tools you can use to promote romance in your marriage. God is exciting and fun, and he  wants our marriages to be exciting and fun, too. If you’re single, you can use these ideas to prepare you for that special someone when he/she comes along. I’ll give you a variety of ways to light the fire. I hope you’ll enjoy the information I’ll share each month about romantic movies, flowers, and books.

What’s more romantic than sitting with your spouse or date and watching an old movie? I’ll review some classics every month. This month’s movie is about a guy with a new job.

I’ve chosen some notable roses for you in the coming months. I’ll share my experiences with them and give tips to help you pick out the ones you like. New Dawn is a popular flower. Find out how to display it below.

Some gripping romantic suspense novels have crossed my path and I’d love to share them with you. My reviews will tell you why I think they’re so much fun. Dee Henderson is always coming out with great stories. I’ve reviewed one below which tells about a woman on the run and her new love.

If you have friends that would like to receive the Domino Monthly, I would love to send it to them. Just forward this ezine to them or send them a link to my web site where they can sign up anytime.

Don’t forget to remind them they’ll also get the free weekly tips on How To See God.

2. Old Movie Review:

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, 1939

James Stewart’s delightful performance as a naïve country boy Jefferson Smith contrasts deliciously with Jean Arthur’s city girl Clarissa Saunders.  Mr. Smith, a boys’ club leader, is chosen to replace a fallen politician.  Political boss Jim Taylor decides Smith is the perfect choice because of  his lack of political savvy. The plan is to keep Smith naïve and ignorant
while corrupt deals are made all around him.

Being a man of conscience, Smith takes his job seriously and attacks real goals with fervency and strength. Of course this gets him into trouble. Smith must have help from his assistant, but Jean Arthur’s Saunders is weary of the political scheming and tries to quit her job during the first part of the film.

I loved the moment Saunders recognizes that Smith has mentioned her first name to his mother. Since everyone calls her Saunders, hearing his mother call her Clarissa stood out like a kiss on the cheek.

Mr. Smith awakens her to a new look at life, and her renewed fervor is key to the story.

This classic should be watched before every July Fourth and before every election. I also think every high school class should visit the Lincoln Memorial and read every word there.

3. Romantic Roses: New Dawn

My husband heard about New Dawn and tried it out along the back fence of our first house. We planted it as the centerpiece of a raised bed where it had plenty of morning sun. It grew to an enormous display along three lattice boards, so we couldn’t dig it up and bring it with us to our new house. Since we enjoyed it so much, we’ll have to get another one and find a place for it somewhere.

A vigorous climber, its light pink fragrant blooms repeat most of the year.  It grows well in zones 5 through 9. New Dawn is shade tolerant, very disease resistant, and blooms on old wood. It passed Longwood Garden’s Ten-Year Rose Trials. In 1997, it entered the World Federation Rose Hall of Fame as the 11th World Convention of Rose Societies voted it the world’s most popular rose.

4. Book review: Dee Henderson’s The Witness

Amanda Griffin witnessed a gruesome crime, and then disappeared. She had to let her family think she was dead. To see them or let them know she’d survived would endanger their lives.

Luke Granger, deputy chief of police, found her years later after she’d seen what happened to her coworkers who only knew her by her most recent alias. Someone was after her and didn’t mind leaving a trail of death to mark his journey. She went back into hiding but left Luke with the impression that they’d meet again.

Amanda’s sisters found a spotlight thrust upon them when they inherited millions from a surprising source. Luke wanted to tell them that Amanda was alive, but he had to wait for the right moment, the right security.
Getting to know Luke and his officers was a pleasure. I always enjoy the romance more than anything, but there was plenty of suspense to keep me riveted. I’m the kind that tries to figure out who the killer is before he’s revealed in the pages, but Dee Henderson makes that difficult. I’ve been hooked on her books since Danger in the Shadows.

I recommend this romantic suspense with all its dark alley turns and life-threatening twists. I enjoyed seeing how Luke tried to protect The Witness.

5. Blognote: What is the Domino Club?

Domino Club is a blog to facilitate encouragement. Many people want to be encouraged, but they forget that giving is better than receiving.

I started this club to unite those of us who want to challenge ourselves to be more than we are. Romance is always better when each partner spends time helping the other.

Join with me in the weekly challenges. These are goals that are simple and can be expanded as you see fit. You can report your successes to the blog comments section each week. Or keep your own journal, listing your goals and your triumphs.
I see room for growth in my life, so I’ve been encouraging others. Focusing on others is a great way to get your eyes off yourself. It’s fun to get a smile from the one you’re helping. Try it out and see.
